The Guilty Remnant embodies the nihilistic spirit in myriad ways – from replacing the air they breathe with the smoke of one of modernity’s most insidiously manipulated products to wearing a uniform of all white. The G.R. are the most puzzling religious upstarts in a world mired in disillusionment, the breakdown of the symbolic order, and the lurking horrors of a society trying to maintain homeostasis in the wake of the Rapture and the rise of tyranny. The federal government, represented here by the AFTEC, has begun to make the turn toward the murderous. Rev. Matt, in my opinion an anti-Job who resists the will of God instead of absorbing it, grows increasingly menacing and potentially despotic. Chief Garvey, the everyman and arch-hero for a jaded, confused, cynical and existential age, desperately clings to a normative home in which to raise his daughter and one he might be able to offer to his wayward son (clearly pulled into the orbit of a megalomaniacal cult-leader).Read More
1. THE GUILTY REMNANT DID IT! In the middle of a town hall meeting, Dean suggests that perhaps the G.R. was responsible for Gladys’s death. It seems a little self-serving...until we begin to consider other factors. The opening of the episode shows Gladys sitting in the office of the G.R. Tears are in her eyes. Since we are unsure of the timeline of some events in the episode, this could be a scene that is later referenced – when Gladys found out her son had been killed. However, it’s also possible that Gladys had just been told of her fate by G.R. leadership. Could she have been martyred for their cause?Read More

When 140 million people around the globe – two percent of the world’s population – suddenly disappear off the face of the planet in The Leftovers, not only are the characters left wondering what the heck is going on – we, the viewers, are too.
Questions abound: Was it the Rapture? Maybe aliens? Perhaps some secret, quantum physics, off-book government experiment gone awry?
With the series only four episodes deep, the answer to what happened is still way up in the air. Nonetheless, though, courtesy of the townsfolk of Mapleton, The Leftovers has given viewers some pretty intriguing reveals to help solve the mystery. Here are the seven disclosures I’m finding most intriguing so far. (Fair warning: Spoilers below!)Read More
